From: "Steve Mayer" Subject: p-adic lecture notes Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 19:15:16 -0000 Newsgroups: sci.math Summary: [missing] A week or two ago there was some interest in my posting of the URL of a set of lecture notes on p-adic numbers, in response to a query. This is a self-contained course aimed at final year undergraduates and postgraduates. Andrew Baker, the author, has now updated the notes to include a bibliography and the exercise sets he refers to in the notes. They can be found at: http://www.maths.gla.ac.uk/~ajb/course-notes.html There is also a set of notes on p-adic Analytic Number Theory by M. Ram Murty at http://iris.mri.ernet.in/~mathweb/lecture/murty-padic00/ These notes cover similar ground to those of Andrew Baker but take a more detailed look at Bernouilli Numbers and go on to consider p-adic L-functions. It also includes an elementary proof of Ostrowski's fascinating result that there are essentially only 2 possible norms on Q, the absolute value and the p-adic norm. Steve Mayer
