See Jing-run Chen, Waring's problem for g(5) = 37, Sci. Sinica 13 (1964) 
1547--1568, MR 31 #135, for a proof that g(5) = 37. It seems this also 
appeared as Chinese Math Acta 6 (1965) 105--127. 

I'll bet there's information out there about G(5) as well but I have no 
references handy.
