I didn't get any replies, but after poking around on the web a little
more, I found some references to SPHEREPACK, a pretty comprehensive
set of FORTRAN programs that handles spherical harmonic expansions,
among other things.  Although I haven't actually tried the code out
yet, it seems to do the job.

The URL may be http://www.scd.ucar.edu/css/software/spherepack, but I
don't quite remember offhand.
