The first one was published at his own expense in 1824 when he was still completely unknown. In order to keep expenses down, the presentation is very condensed. An expanded version was published in Crelle's Journal in 1826. A modern presentation of what Abel did can be found in Michael Rosen's article in AMS Monthly, 1995, p.495-505. For those of us who are lucky enough to read Norwegian, there is also an article by Christian Skau in Normat, 1990, p.53-84. -- Bergen, Per Manne
