look up gosper's HAKMEM, which is available on the web.
one of the contributors to HAKMEM (gosper himself?)
presented a set of recursive algorithms for continued-
fraction arithmetic.

HAKMEM is a mid-70's archive of a small intradepartmental
mailing list at MIT's AI Lab.  It's mostly about various
quasi-recreational math tricks, some of use to programmers.
