	Search Contents of Mathematics Journals

Some publishers provide search engines capable of searching the contents of their journals. In almost all cases, the search is limited to fairly recent material. In many cases, the search is performed only over topmatter (title, abstract, keywords). In some cases, access is restricted to those whose institutions have a paid subscription to the journal.

No claim to completeness is made. Excellent companion sites include those at AMS and St Andrews University. [AMS: http://www.ams.org/journals/. Also MAA: http://www.maa.org/pubs/journals.html] We do not list journals which provide no search tools (or none beyond simple author lookup, which can be achieved with Mathematical Reviews or Zentralblatt). Note that in many cases there are journals which are available full-text in electronic format but these might not provide a search feature.

The best search engines are those provided by publishers which permit simultaneous searches of all the journals they publish.

The search engine is currently limited to topmatter, although full-text searching is evidently under development. • JSTOR (for "Journal Storage") provides to subscribers the scanned images of pages of complete journals. The images have been scanned and converted with reasonable accuracy to text in order to create a searchable database of the full text. Search is also limited to subscribers. Journals must be searched individually. Starting Feb. 1999, the Transactions of the AMS, 1900-1920 will for a limited time be available for a free demo of JSTOR. Mathematics journals include:

  • Applicable Analysis, An International Journal. This is one of a number of mathematics journals published by Gordon and Breach, but the others appear not to allow searching even of topmatter. ("Curiously", pricing information on their journals is difficult to locate.)
