Squamata Taxonomy
Two major monophyletic groups:
- Iguania: tongue is generally soft, fleshy, used for prey capture and/or food manipulation
- Includes iguanas, true chamaeleons, anoles, collared lizards, and others
- Scleroglossa: tongue is generally firm, used in chemoreception in conjunction with the vomeronasal organ (VNO)
- Includes geckos, skinks, night lizards, Gila monsters, monitor lizards. . . and amphisbaenians. . . and snakes.
