• Single large bony headshield, usually semicircular with posterior ìhornsî

• Characters shared with jawed vertebrates (Gnathostomata):

  • Muscular paired fins with a narrow base
  • True cellular dermal bone
  • Epicercal tail (dorsal lobe longer than ventral lobe)
  • Sclerotic ring of plates around the eye
